May Thurlow: Jenny Flood

Historian Dr Jenny introduces the story of May Thurlow who adopted a piglet in Southease during her time stationed here in WW2.

Dr Jenny Flood is a community and oral historian, particularly interested in how extraordinary events impact on ordinary people and the places where they live. Since 2013, Jenny has worked on a number of heritage and arts projects, most notably Newhaven’s First World War, where she undertook the research behind a series of information panels, collectively known as ‘The Poppy Trail’.

Most recently, Jenny was the producer of the short film ‘Brazen Souls’, which tells the story of the loss of HMS Brazen, off the coast of Newhaven in 1800. This is part of a larger project to celebrate St Michael’s Church’s 900th anniversary and includes a school’s project on Smuggling in Sussex.

Jenny is a trustee of Newhaven Historical Society, and enjoys working with schools and community groups, bringing history to life through workshops, talks and walks. She has written a variety of articles and books to accompany her projects, as well as appearing on TV and radio. Jenny completed her history doctorate at the University of Sussex in 2021.
